FTC Alleges HomeAdvisor Made False Claims Regarding Leads and Imposes Penalty

HomeAdvisor Settles with FTC Over False Claims about Quality of Leads

HomeAdvisor, affiliated with Angi, has reached a settlement with the FTC after being accused of using deceptive tactics to sell leads to home improvement professionals.

The FTC is a federal agency that promotes competition and protects and educates consumers against unfair business practices.

False and Misleading Claims by HomeAdvisor

Since at least 2014, HomeAdvisor has been accused of making false claims about the leads it was selling. It is a home improvement website that offers information and ratings about home improvement companies.

HomeAdvisor earns money by selling leads to the businesses listed on its site. The FTC alleged that it misled home contractors about the quality and source of these leads. Additionally, HomeAdvisor’s claims that its leads result in jobs at higher rates were unsubstantiated, and the company’s sales agents misrepresented the optional mHelpdesk subscription as free.

The order to compensate the duped home improvement service providers was made in January 2023 and was approved by the FTC in April 2023. HomeAdvisor is required to pay $7.2 million dollars and stop falsely claiming that leads are from those who are ready to hire or have contacted HomeAdvisor directly.
